Storytelling Lisboa and Resvés Cowork presents:
WELCOME TO THE STORY BOOTCAMP
A two-session workshop to practice and improve your stories.

THE DETAILS
The bootcamp will be over two separate 3 hour sessions, weekday evenings, the first week of February. When: February 6th and 8th from 18:00 to 21:00.
Where: Resvés Cowork Space, R. Saraiva de Carvalho, 1C
WHAT TO EXPECT
Over the two days, participants will have the opportunity to share their stories twice and receive structured feedback from the group. Emphasis will be placed on finding and creating narrative structure.By the end of the workshop, you should have a more polished story for the stage, but also a better knowledge of how story structure works and how to apply it to future material. You will also have practiced the scary thing about performing for strangers and understand the edits, details, and other tweaks that make or break a good story.

BEFORE THE BOOTCAMP
•We ask that all participants attend our free workshop on January 29th. If you can't attend, no worries! We will send you the handouts/slides and a YouTube video of the workshop to go over. This is so everyone in the workshop can have a common language and reference to maximize our time.•Prepare a 7-10 minute story. This doesn't have to be perfect—in fact, it should be far from it! Extremely rough drafts here are encouraged.
FEBRUARY 6: DAY ONE
•First, we will all together evaluate a story of a professional storyteller so that we can develop a common and non-judgmental way to talk about story structure.•Then you take the stage! Each participant will "perform" their story—and this is a class so reading from a text is absolutely allowed.•As a group we will look for the underlying structure of each story and talk about adjustments/edits to make the story stronger.
FEBRUARY 8: DAY TWO
•Everyone will show up with a new edited version of the story.•We will talk about details and aspect of performance.•This time, we ask that participants perform from memory—this is to practice getting a feel for it. We don't expect perfection!• As a group, we will offer feedback and thoughts on each story—our underlying aim is for everyone to be better able recognize the things that contribute and detract from great storytelling.

LIZ MELCHOR
Liz Melchor has spent a lot of time writing both creatively and as a journalist, publishing in The Washington Post, Marie Claire, The Guardian, and New York Magazine’s The Cut, among others. In the early days of Storytelling Lisboa, she used to beg and plead with people to get on stage—luckily she doesn't have to do this anymore. She evolved as a storyteller by having to hop on stage a lot in those early days. She knows storytelling is a skill that can be worked at due to her own experience and from watching others grow. Apart from storytelling, her present obsession is drawing primarily with robots. She has an undergraduate degree in literature and graduate degrees in both psychology and writing.
CRISTIAN FIGUEROA
Cristian started as a storyteller in February 2020. After a pandemic break, he was invited to start the Portuguese edition of Storytelling Lisboa. He is currently the co-host and organizer of the English edition. His stage presence is characterized by tender stories, big smiles, and hugs for the storytellers and the audience. He knows what it is to be extremely vulnerable on stage. Apart from storytelling, he studied veterinary medicine and neuroscience. He also runs meditation and sharing groups and is a Thai massage therapist. Cristian was born in Colombia and lived in Brazil and Argentina before making Lisbon home.

ABOUT STORYTELLING LISBOA
We are a completely free monthly storytelling event in Lisbon that has been running for over five years. We are sort of like The Moth except there are no points or competition. We welcome everyone—inclusion is our core value—and we are super curious to hear about people's lives. We enjoy the vulnerability, humor, and complexity shared on our stage. We have both English and Portuguese editions.
